The YMCA organisation donated diaries to all POWs, (including American and commonwealth prisoners).
These were offered to prisoners to help occupy some of their time whilst in custody and to give them a permanent record of their experiences.
A number of these still exist.
Lawrence Casey's diary was incomplete at the end of the war and in pretty bad condition. It has been re-compiled using some of the original artwork and added to that are documents that came to light postwar. The author is very grateful to all those kind people who supplied material.
Where original material is of a poor condition, facsmiles have been substituted.
