Lawrence with his mother and father 1940.

His Career

No 58 Squadron RAF was flying Whitleys from Yorkshire at the outbreak of the Second World War, and first went into action on the night of 3rd/4th September, 1939, when - in conjunction with No. 51 Squadron - it made a leaflet raid over Germany. This was the first occasion on which R.A.F aircraft penetrated into Germany during the Second World War.

No. 623 Squadron RAF was a bomber squadron of the RAF during 1943 at RAF Downham Market in Norfolk It was equipped with Stirling 3 bombers, as part of No 3 Group in Bomber Command. The squadron carried out night raids against Germany, but was short-lived and was disbanded on 6 December 1943 at Downham Market.

N0 115 Squadron RAF, history is available via link on main page.

Lawrence married Sarah Alice Twiss, in Edinburgh, they had three children - James, Malcolm and Michael.

James has just retired from teaching in Edinburgh. Malcolm, sadly died in Mar 2008 having been a very successfull businessman in the USA and Michael currently lives in East Yorkshire and works for BAE Systems as a software engineer.

To date I am able to fully account for almost 50 operations completed by Lawrence. a wonderful achievement by any standard for a bomber command tail gunner!
